Study Food Science & Technology in USA

HIGHLIGHTS
In basic terms, Food Science and Technology deals with studying food compositions as well as looking for ways to refine them. Food scientists conduct experiments to improve the safety of foods, increase the number of days they can stay edible, enrich the taste of foods, and even add to the nutritional benefits of the things we eat. Since feeding is a habit that is common to us all, pursuing a career in Food Science and Technology is not a bad idea at all. It is lucrative and will remain relevant. So, if you happen to be a foodie, and you are naturally curious about the science of food production, you should start considering a career in the field.

DIFFERENT COURSES RELATED TO FOOD SCIENCE
WHAT IS FOOD SCIENCE?
  1. Food science is the study of the physical, biological, and chemical makeup of food; the causes of food deterioration; and the concepts underlying food processing.
  2. Food scientists and technologists apply scientific disciplines including chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and nutrition to the study of food to improve the safety, nutrition, wholesomeness and availability of food.
  3. Depending on their area of specialization, food scientists may develop ways to process, preserve, package, and/or store food according to industry and government specifications and regulations.
WHAT IS FOOD TECHNOLOGY?
  1. Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe food.
  2. Related fields include analytical chemistry, biotechnology, engineering, nutrition, quality control, and food safety management.
WHAT IS FOOD PROCESSING AND MANUFACTURING?
  1. Food processing is the treatment of food substances by changing their properties to preserve it, improve its quality or make it functionally more useful.
  2. Food processors take raw animal, vegetable, or marine materials and transform them into edible products through the application of labor, machinery, energy, and scientific knowledge.
  3. Chemical, biological, and mechanical processes are used to convert relatively bulky, perishable, and typically inedible food materials into shelf-stable, convenient, and palatable foods and beverages.
  4. Food processing is one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States.
  5. According to the FDA, there are approximately 44,000 food processors and 113,000 food warehouses in the U.S. that provide processed foods to our country, and exports throughout the world. The processors include canners, producers, wineries, and other food and beverage manufacturers and distributors.
  6. There are more than 1.2 million retail food facilities (restaurants, grocery stores, and others) that serve or sell foods directly to consumers.
WHAT IS FOOD RESEARCH?
  1. Food research is the careful, systematic study, investigation, and compilation of information about foods and their components.
  2. What is Food Manufacturing? Food manufacturing is the mass production of food products from raw animal and plant materials, using principles of food technology.
WHAT IS PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT?
Product development is the creation of new flavors, colors or varieties of existing products and/or the creation of entirely new products.
WHAT IS QUALITY ASSURANCE & QUALITY CONTROL?
Both quality assurance and quality control involve the process of ensuring that products are manufactured correctly and that ingredients and finished products are tested and meet safety and quality specifications.

WHAT IS FOOD REGULATION?
Food regulation is the process of determining standards for products, defining safety, and inspecting products. Regulations are set by governments.

INDIAN CONTEXT [AS PER http://IBEF.ORG]
Food processing is simply a method by which agricultural products are transformed into food products that are fit for consumption. It involves different ways of processing such as, grinding grain to make raw flour, home cooking, and industrial methods to produce convenience foods including noodles, pasta and chips. The food processing industry forms a major part of India’s economy owing to the variety of food products that the country harvests and further processes for consumption. India is the largest producer of milk, bananas, mangoes, guavas, papaya, ginger, okra; second-largest producer of wheat, rice, fruits, vegetables, tea, sugarcane and cashew nuts and the third-largest producer of cereals, coconut, lettuce, chicory, nutmeg, mace, cardamom and pepper worldwide. Rising incomes and a growing demand for healthy, packaged food ensure that this industry is likely to sustain all seasons and never fear a recession. The industry also receives growing support from the government.

MARKET STATS
  1. India’s food processing sector is one of the largest in the world and its output is expected to reach US$ 535 billion by 2025-26.
  2. This sector is expected to generate 9 million jobs by 2024.
  3. The Indian food industry is expanding at a CAGR of 11% and the food processing sector accounts for 32% of the total food industry.
  4. India’s food sector attracted US$ 4.18 billion in foreign direct investments between April 2014 and March 2020.
  5. By 2030, Indian annual household consumption is expected to triple, making India the fifth-largest consumer in the world
